I’ve arrived.
I had my first negative comment yesterday and it generated more traffic and comments on my blog than anything else in the past month. Okay, now I understand why politicians use negative campaign tactics – it gets people’s attention!
I really thought the post was relatively benign but I guess I could kinda sorta maybe see how 46% of America might get offended. But it clearly wasn’t my intention. Here’s a little snippet if you didn’t catch it yesterday:
In response to my post Kelly said (no blog URL left):
How can you talk like that to your daughter. I am and will always be a McCain supporter, when my kids got up this morning(12, 14 & 15) that were sad that Obama became president and started to say negative things about him. I stopped them and said he is now the president of the united state – your UNITED state and you must support him while he is president. Obama would be disappointed in you and your daughter from what I have heard he wants a united america not a divided. Your still divided even though he won. BTW my father is a great man and he loves his grandchildren and cares deeply about that generation and he can’t text either.
Here was my response:
@Kelly – I’m not sure what you are talking about. I don’t say negative things about McCain the person, but I do not agree with his ideology. These are the thoughts/words of a 14 yo and the culmination her own opinion after reading the newspaper, watching 3 debates, discussing the issues with her classmates and watching a documentary on both candidates. The text comment came from her not me and it was her interpretative comment of her believing that he doesn’t get her generation. My father doesn’t text either and he cares about the future too. Please know that we are unified in the fact that we love our kids and our country. There is nothing divisive about that.
Sorry you took offense.
Here was her reply:
I am sorry I took offense too. I hope that my worst fears for him becoming president and your greatest hopes for him becoming president are not the same – because america will never become united.
Snippets from the conversation that ensued:
From: Annabassham
@Kelly – I want a united America, but I am also on the defensive for Obama. I know (personally) some right-wing extremists who think Obama is a terrorist and hope he will be assassinated. I thought McCain’s concession speech was gracious, but I couldn’t believe the boos and negative comments I heard leaving the mouths of his supporters. My point is that there are people who will remain “divided” but as long as the majority of us come together and take responsibility for change, we will see the positive changes our country desperately needs.
I hope that we all can really COME TOGETHER and get over petty arguments under Barack Obama’s leadership.
From: David Huston
@Kelly – Great job to you too, as you exemplify the worst part of the Republican party: the part that seeks to twist any remotely Democrat-supporting sentiment into a personal attack, and then retaliate against nothing.
And here’s our friend Kelly again:
@Dave Huston – anyone who starts a post out with now we don’t have to move to Canada exemplifies the worst of the democratic party! Enough said; I’ll just have to wait and see if my greatest fear come true.
@ Anna And that has nothing to do with thinking that Obama is a terrorist and anyone who want anyone to be assassinated is not a TRUE american.
We at Bacon Is My Enemy have no enemies today and would like to ask Kelly to come back with her negative comments on the next blog post that I write about a tender mother/daughter moment. It seems to create twice the amount of blog traffic, so thanks Kelly, I appreciate the extra hits.
All I can say is that if feeling all good inside about having hope for the future of a unified America under Obama is wrong, then I don’t wanna be RIGHT.
Thanks for your kind words and for reading my blog. Big hugs to everyone on all sides of the political fence … I’ve got nothing but love.

I try really hard to not let people on the Internet upset me. Re-reading Kelly’s comments triggered a slight twinge in me, however. I actually enjoy it when these hardcore Republican zealots (oh yeah, I went there) say some off-the-wall comment, then say “enough said,” as if they’ve just made the be-all-end-all-totally-logical-no-counterargument point and, illustrating the close mindedness of those who live to the right of the right-wing, indicate that they will be not discussing this further.
Heaven forbid they take the time to have a conversation like adults and, perhaps, learn something.
Wow, I thought that was an amazing post. It is wonderful that your daughter is so invested in her world. At that age, my biggest worry was getting my bangs high enough (yes, I just admitted that). Yea for her and for you.
And that is so funny, I think the first thing I said was, darn it, Vancouver looked pretty cool! But I’m so glad I can stay. I’ll never understand the Republican side, but hey, I can appreciate that they have a different perception for some reason. But I don’t attack them for it. Shame on Kelly.

I think we are living parallel lives, eh? I had some hate mail for the first time in 3 years just recently. And from pro-Obama banter too. Go us!

Hi, I wandered over from NaBloPoMo! Love your blog and LOVED your post yesterday. Glad you are teaching your daughter to invest in her own future. I hope i can do the same for my child.
Yes We Did!!!!!
Jen L.´s last blog post..Is it really only day 6?
I got to your site through the Blogher ad on my own site. As I read through this post but not the original one, I am left with one thing: ALL of us are forgetting that we are human and therefore will make tremendous mistakes throughout our lives, politically, personally, spiritually and otherwise. I am complete different from when I was 20 and marched around as a full blown atheist, then “jesus” found me and I bible-thumped my way to 30. As I approach 40 I have found middle ground, I still consider myself a fundamentalist and definite Jesus freak, but I consider people and their feelings, their beliefs and do not I stomp on them or someone they believe in. I only comment here because I had a very similar thing happen to me just yesterday. I did not vote for Obama, but only because of two policies that he supports. When he was announced the winner, I was joyous for him, I was excited for his followers and I immediately prayed for his safety and that of his family. Then the morning after the election, I was sitting in a doctors office waiting for my appt. Three women sat across me who were at least 15-20 years older than I. They would be considered mentors and wise women to me. I respect them simply for their age and experience that is greater than my own. We started a benign conversation about how exciting the day before was etc. As the brief exchange unfolded it became obvious that they were Democrats. I simply kept a respectful stance and commented where appropriate, then the eldest of the ladies said, “well, it’s well known that Republicans are NOT intellectual and have been dumbed down ever since Reagan.” I quietly replied that many Republicans are very intelligent people and she snapped back at me, “NAME ONE, in your generation or any other”. I immediately withdrew and went into my appt. As they continued their educated conversation. I have four kids and as this campaign has unfolded we have encouraged them to ask questions, to get educated and not choose the candidate that we support to find out who and why they support anyone, friend, politician, relationship or leader. I want them to be human and follow the Golden Rule at all times. From living abroad for many years I know we live in a wonderful country regardless of it’s short coming and I am hopeful for the future come-what-may.

I think the converstation with your daughter was very moving. I loved it!

@Dave Huston I totally understand where you are coming from, but hey, I grew up in a conservative environment and sometimes people are going to believe what they are going to believe. I think though, the keys to it all is playing nice and I think Obama has done that really well.
@Foxy – thanks for the kind words! Vancouver Canada rocks, and is luckily only a short drive away.
@Aimee – *sigh*
@Jen L – I will take these little successes where I can. They are so few and far between. Thanks for the kudos too!
@Gabrielle – I definitely think that anytime people group individuals into big silos of presumptions, it’s never a good idea. I think arbitrarily linking idiocy with either Democrats or Republicans is silly … as my friend BB always says, “God spread the crazies around.”
@Brooke – I do feel like I met a milestone in the blogging evolution! Also, I am lucky my daughter rocks and is very wise – most of the time.
Hi! I’m here via your comment on our blog through NaBloPoMo. Well, I am NOT going to be your second negative comment.
14 yr old dauughter? I bet you can give me some tips as I have a 12 yr old boy and a 10 yr old daughter. My 10 yr old is giving me the run for my money these days.
You got extra blog traffic from Kelly’s negativity? Awesome. It’s great when something negative can have a silver lining. Congrats on reaching this blogger milestone.

Oh yes, I remember when I started getting hate mail. Gotta love it when people read you enough/care enough to make a comment. I even allow anonymous comments! LMAO
This post is excellent. It’s real, and your daughter rocks.
OMG. It really happened.

Well, I was here yesterday and I think I found your blog through twitter, although it seems we’re NaBloPoMo buddies and also both fans of dooce. Weird.
Anyway, your negative comment drew me here and here I’ll stay. I have yet to get attacked on my blog; does the argument I had yesterday (that lasted *eternity!*) via Facebook count? Some people are really just unwilling to step outside of their tunnels. Anyway, I’m happy you’re picking up traffic and hope you’ll keep hovering around my place as well. And the Obamalanche totally kicked ass, did it not? I’ve been bouncy and grinning (and crying intermittently, I’ll admit) since Tuesday night.

Freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of religion, freedom of political views — God bless America. Keep thinking outside the box and keep thinking on your own … yet remember we are all in this together.
You Rock.
I saw you visited my blog and I wanted to say 1. thanks and 2. Mazel Tov on the negative comment. I don’t know what else to say to that except hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion and at least it creates dialogue.

Words are easily used to create imaginary divisions among people. You handled your FNC (First Negative Comment) very gracefully in my opinion.
Though I love the universe of random blogs and the comments they inspire, very few of us remain as civil as we ought, when hiding behind the screen names. I sometimes find that the most vehemently expressed opinions are the ones that are the least deeply held? So, continue to be amused rather than annoyed and enjoy the controversy you illicit! I certainly did. Blog it up! You’re doing great.
