Run, Bacon, Run

While I was in the car today I was listening to a show on our local public radio station called “Sound Focus.” Today’s show featured an interview (about 33 minutes into the show) of a writer/blogger named Shauna James Ahern, also known as the Gluten Free Girl. It was a great to hear her talk on this rainy Seattle day and there were a couple of great quotes that I took away from it:

“Understanding your own story is the most beautiful parts of all this … when you finally feel well, the possibilities are endless.”

and …

“Remind myself to say “yes” in every moment as it arises exactly as it is, instead of always longing for it to be something different.”

I love that. I am trying to do that with my own life, opening myself up to the possibilities and saying yes to things that I wouldn’t normally say ‘yes’ to. Just the other day, Andrew Woods asked if I wanted to join his Jingle Bells 5k Run & Walk team and I actually said I’d do it. Well, what I actually said was, “you’re on like donkey kong” – but you get the point.

At this moment, I am going to register, train and see how far I can get. If I don’t actually race because I am a completely out of shape sack of potatoes, then at the very least I will have gotten off my ass and started exercising. Just the thought of doing something like this seemed impossible just a few months ago because of my brief stint with depression. Now I feel like I can do anything.

And hey, if a Filipino crooner on youtube can be the new lead singer of an 80s rock band, then just about anything seems possible if you first just say, ‘yes.’

  1. Good for you! Checked out info on that event and I can safely say I’d be down with the “Children’s Run with the Elves” more than the 5k. But could I pass as one of the kids, or one of the elves? Hmmm.

Also? Thank you. I now have an Arnel Pineda crush. A much better start to the day, especially since I’d woken up cranky.

  4. AMEN to that “longing for something different” line. Seriously why is it so hard to ditch the Rapunzel philosophy and just be happy with what you got? I’m gonna put that on my fridge.

  5. It’ll be great to have you on the team. There was a time, only a few years ago, when I thought I couldn’t do it either. Now I’m doing it. Just do your best. Set small goals. when you’ve conquered it 3 times, set a new goal, that’s a little bit harder. repeat.

Don’t forget to register with the ‘Jingle Nerds’ team :)

  6. “you’re on like donkey kong” *lol* My daughter just started saying that this past week. Talk about history repeating itself. The run sounds like a good goal. Keep us posted I bet you’ll surprise yourself on how far you get. Plus exercise is great for depression.
