Famous For Being Fat

January 7th, 2009

In a weird twist of events I am now “famous” for being fat.

A couple of days ago I was inspired to post a New Year’s resolution vblog on iReport (CNN) because I saw this video of a woman who has been struggling with her weight for 25 years. In the video she sounded frustrated (but determined) and just plain flabbergasted that she hasn’t been successful after all these years. I know the feeling, I have been on the yo-yo diet circuit for 14 years. I really don’t want it to be 25.

So on a whim, I shot a video, edited with iMovie and uploaded the video without really thinking about what would happen next. Honestly, I just thought it would be a great way to more publicly commit to changing my life … and a little part of me thought it might work to promote my blog a bit.

Well yesterday, the nice folks at CNN Online called me because they wanted to interview me, feature my iReport video and keep tabs on my weight loss efforts. This morning it hit the front page of the Health section and for a while it was in the Top 10 stories on CNN – woohoo! And now, it’s official: I have gained notoriety for being overweight. That’s just plain bizarre.

Of all the things the reasons that I can even fathom being on CNN or to have an article written about me, THAT REASON was not in the realm of my imagination. I mean, I used to think that being overweight kept me from accomplishing my goals. Now the fact that I am overweight is helping me to accomplish my goals. Go figure. I think this is a great first lesson in putting yourself out there and going for it.

Let’s just hope that this story has a happy ending. No pressure with the world watching and all. Good lord, this makes me want to dive into a slice of coconut cream pie, but doh! THE WORLD IS WATCHING! Now I have to walk the talk! Holy shit!

Well, in lieu of the pie, I guess I’ll have to settle for this dry-ass Ak-mak cracker and some green tea instead. Sweet Jesus, this is gonna be hard.

(Oh yeah, a big thanks to Rob, Sunny and Christine at Momversation for providing me that damn camera. I’m unstoppable now.)

    Hey Giyen,
I’m a fellow 30ish gal with aspirations for a writing life. I saw your story on CNN, and I wish you all the best with your 2009 goals! I also had something of a mid-life chrysalis not long ago and started blogging as a creative outlet.
I love the idea that your video post on iReport was a spur of the moment decision. In fact, spontaneous action like posting your video can set your course in a new and adventurous direction. You couldn’t have estimated the reach your message would have, so I’m writing to cheer you on!

CNN, they’re watching you. It has to do with Momversation, they’re just grooming you for tech-savvy single mom of a typical teenage girl, who happens to live in Hawaii.

That last part jumped into my mind uninvited.

I just have to say, hearing you say that

“I think that growing up Asian, and as a woman, you’re totally raised with this notion that you should keep it all inside and not have a lot of self-expression,” she said. Blogging “gives me the freedom to branch out,” Kim said.

really caught my attention! The past year for me has been a year of re-learning how to express myself and even relate to myself as a woman. And while I’m not as brave as you (to drop my safety net, aka my job) I truly hope that I can find the guts to go where you’re going.

Congrats on the nod from Cnn.com! Free publicity ROX!

When I saw this part… “When she was a child in Coos Bay, Oregon, Kim knew she wanted to be a journalist or a writer one day, but her parents wanted her to go into a more lucrative career such as law or medicine.” … I had to laugh because my husband (not Asian) and I (AJA) are always joking about “approved Asian professions”…yes, as in law and medicine, also known as the professions I did not go into :-)

I live in WS and have been reading your blog via WestSeattleblog.com.

First off, congratulations on your successes in blogging and being a freelance writer. Secondly, kudos on your 2009 Resolution and interview on CNN!

Let me say that I love your insights on being Korean and parenting a teen daughter. I have a HS teen daughter who is adopted from Korean – so I benefit from your insights on both fronts. Your Korean insights, thoughts and feelings are helpful in better understanding our daughter. Even though she was adopted as an infant she certainly shares some of the characteristics you’ve mentioned.

    Keep up your great writing!

    Hello Giyen,

I must say this – You are one brave woman! I commend you for what you are working to accomplish. My 2009 (all all other years before this) goal is to loose weight as well. Something I have been wanting to do since I was a teenager. I have struggled with my weight for the longest time. I have lost some weight over the years but still not able to reach my goal. Over the past 2 years, I have learnt to accept me, as an individual with many flaws (i.e my skin, my fat ass, unruly hair, and the list goes on). I needed to make that change in how i perceive myself because if I dont, no one else will.

My point is I commend you for doing this and yet staying true to yourself and doing what you want to do. Not many Asians can admit that and actually have the courage to put it into action.

    Good for you!

It don’t matter what they’re saying about you, just as long as they’re talking about you. Can’t quite remember the quote, but you get the idea.

Now, don’t CNN have an empty position for a health writer now that Obama has poached Sanjay? While your’e on a roll, you should give them a call and tell’em Jo sent ya.

    Hi Giyen,

My husband saw the article about you on cnn.com and told me about it. Its really remarkable because I also quit a 60 hour per week job and am now blogging and really into social media. I think just quitting the stressful job and following your calling will improve your health tremendously. I know its that way with me and I was so happy to see that others are doing what I have been doing for a few years now.

What’s even more of a coincidence is that I have a blog called Fat Science (http://fatscience.wordpress.com) where I talk about my battle with my weight. I have actually given up trying to lose weight – if you read my posts on this blog you’ll understand why. I’m a biological scientist and I follow basic research on obesity. If you would like a different perspective, I suggest you take a look at Gina Kolata’s book, Rethinking Thin. I would also recommend Health At Every Size by Linda Bacon.

I really hope you and I can start a dialog – I’ve really wanted to find other writers who are doing what we’re doing.

    Hey Giyen,

I’m so excited for you on your Journey Through ‘09. I just saw the iReport video on CNN.com; that’s just so cool and inspiring.

I still work my regular 40 hr/wk job, but it is definitely not that stressful and also happens to be a place I love to work. However, I started doing freelance work early last year and I can totally relate to your desire to do it full-time. Perhaps that will be something I tackle in the future.

I’ve been using the Lose It! app for iPod touch and iPhone to track my calories and nutrition. Since the 3rd I’ve dropped 1.2 pounds, which sounds like almost nothing but that single pound has really motivated me. It’s amazingly handy, and even better, it’s free. Anyone looking for a super-useful and easy-to-operate program should check it out (and, no, they are not paying me… I just love it!)

Again, Giyen, good luck on your mission and I wish you success in saying yes!

    Giyen,

I had a minor brush with fame with my blog also… for being a fat guy on a bike. :)

I started bicycle commuting on an (ir)regular basis as part of my weight loss effort.

The local media got wind of it, and interviewed me, and followed me to work in the morning. It was fun, but that was only a few months ago, and nobody remembers now.

Yours is a bit bigger. It was CNN, not WAVE3 in Louisville, but it will fade. In the mean time, use the publicity to get some more freelance work.

    Here’s a secret:
You can eat what you want… in moderation.

As far as my eating habits I’m slowly but surely turning them around. It’s not easy to change them overnight. It takes time. Just like it took time to add the weight it will take time to take it off:) Best of luck to ya.

Honestly, the part of the article that attracted me here was that you’re out there working at home as a writer. That is also my dream. I think it only helped that they specified you’re trying to get down to your *prepregnancy* weight, which means you’re also a mother. Considering I took an out of home job because I feel like we need a steady income to provide for the kids, your story really struck me. I would definitely love to learn more about how you’re making it work because I really don’t mesh with the whole getting up early to commute, sit at a desk doing other things that don’t exactly further my writing, and missing my kids all day — the window view has the drawback of letting me see what lovely weather I get to miss.

Thanks for putting yourself out there!

Hey, just a little info for you, don’t we all need more advice???? I’m a sister who has “battled” my weight for more years than I’ll post. Mostly for the last ten I’ve “accepted” myself fat (I heard that’d help, better than resisting…. you’ve probably heard that what you resist persists?). I finally felt “ready” to move on to the next phase. You stated that you prayed about your career move. Well, I prayed that I’d be released from the need to eat to relax, comfort, etc…. and that was most of the time. And, it happened… one day I just felt like it was time to walk into my apt. and sit down instead of going to the fridge. I sat there, then laid there, and just let God hug me. I cried, and expressed my fears and then they just sort of melted away and I haven’t eaten compulsively since. I was a member of Overeaters Anonymous for a time, but that wasn’t magic either. Prayer works, when you are ready. I CAN tell you that as long as you are not peaceful, you will NOT be happy even if you are thinner, richer, etc. Peace is the Path and there is really only one way and it is between you and Him/It/Whatever You Call Whatever. I call on my Heavenly Father, who I now know loves me beyond my ability to grasp it. The food, drinking, swearing, pottymouthing, etc. will only keep you from your Peace. Sorry, end of lecture:) Check out http://www.reallove.com Real love is everything. Peace out.

You mentioned feeling unhealthy right now. Doing a short weight training segment from a DVD daily or every other day would increase fat-burning muscle, and make you feel a whole lot better. Congrats on your huge success! I know it must be strange to get that kind of attention in a way, but it’s still very exciting.

Being famous for being fat is a kick-ass way of turning your burden into a benefit; it’s taking the proverbial lemons and making lemonade. (You can certainly take it from me.) But playing devil’s advocate here — are you sure you want to measure your success in pounds lost? How about taking up a sport (like running/walking) and setting goals for stamina, speed, etc.? Or measuring your progress by improvements to your vitals? Just throwing some challenging grist into the weight-loss mill. Hey, it’s my job. Good luck! Live your dreams!

Wow, you’re awesome! I’m here by way of MizFit and I was pretty much RIGHT.WHERE.YOU.ARE. exactly one year ago. I could literally feel my exact feelings when I watched your video. It brings tears to my eyes! (I’m even a freelance writer and everything — so we have a little in common! haha!) Anyway, I wanted accountability, I wanted to live my life and I wanted to start saying YES again. So I proclaimed 2008 “The year of me” and it was. I set myself goals, to run a 5k by June, to run a 10k by October, and I ACTUALLY DID IT! And I ended up losing 40 pounds along the way. Turns out, I actually ran 3 5ks and 2 10ks (I ran one yesterday) in the span of a year. And now I’m training for a half-marathon for March. (CRAZY!!!!)

If you’d have asked my fatter self (a balmy 180 pounds) in January of 2008 what the year ahead held for me, I would never have imagined what actually happened. I wish you your final success this year in the YEAR OF Giyen!!!! This is YOUR YEAR! I know you can do it!! If you want to weigh in with us at my blog on Fridays, feel free! There are lots of blogs who do it in groups and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them! Safety in numbers, as I always say!!!
