I think I would have just imploded if I was home schooled. First of all, I don’t think that there would be anyone at home to home school me. Secondarily, as a child of Korean immigrants, it was the other way around – I was often home schooling my parents. I can definitely recall quizzing my newly immigrated Korean step-mother on the naturalization questions. Or preparing the tax returns for the household. Or interpreting for my parents when they pretending that they didn’t understand English (even when they really did). You try arguing with a child who is interpreting for their parents. It shuts people down.
I think that I would make an awful home school teacher, but I applaud those that do. Teaching Paige would be something akin to this:
Me: Math is important.
Paige: Nuh-uh.
Me: Uh-huh.
Paige: Nuh-uh.
Me: Uh-uh.
Paige: Nuh-uh.
Me: Math is important BECAUSE I SAID SO AND I’M THE BOSS.
Dana Loesch from Mamalogues asks Mindy Roberts, The Mommy Blog, and I about home schooling in this episode of Momversation.
Oh yeah, just incase you wanted to get a closer look at segregation in the early 80′s, this is what it looks like:

That class picture looks very familiar. I was the only Asian, or really 1/2 Asian at a school full of whities. Nice they, I’m sure quite intentionally, put the two minorities on the bottom. Sweet.

OMG that picture…
My mom and I have always joked that we would be Home Schooling’s worst nightmare. Here would be OUR sample day:
Mom: Do you want to learn spelling?
Me: I guess. What are my other options?
Mom: Uh, eating rice krispie treats and watching Price is Right?
Me: I vote for that!

You were such a little cutie! All I could think when I saw it was “Nobody puts Baby in a corner!” You were too precious to have your photo thrown in with the rest of those generic kids!

You’re from Coos Bay? One of my best friends is from there, and probably about the same age as you. Do you know Wendy Mills-Bader?
My sister is homeschooling her kids, and I can’t help but worry that her already pretty self-absorbed daughter is going to get even more self-absorbed if she gets to be the center of everyone’s world at home. Obviously this doesn’t happen with all homeschoolers (and I’m an only child, so get similar stereotypes), but with my niece’s personality… I have concerns.
I’ve always been intrigued by homeschooling. It sounds so wonderful in theory–your child can work at her own pace, you get to choose what she’s learning and pursue her special interests, it’s flexible and you can vacation whenever you want. In practice though, I don’t think I could last a day!

That was a series of Dorthy Hamill haircuts I received over the years. Mortifying. Asian hair does not “feather” very well. I think I look cute NOW, but back then I wished I could rock the side pony tail like the girl in the middle.
@Alison I am totally from Coos Bay! Go Pirates! Wendy sounds familiar but I have such a hard time remembering. I think I need to break out the yearbook.
My home schooling probably would have gone something like this:
PHOEBE: What does it mean?
JESSICA: Google it, I have no idea. Let me know what you find out, I’m kind of curious myself.
I’d also like to note in your Kinder picture that there’s not even any dark-haired white kids!! (well maybe one?) One of my favorite school pictures is from my high school band.. you have to squint to find a blonde kid! (there’s probably one 2-5 blondes out of 100+ band and colorguard members each school year). Then again, I did go to high school in Southern California..
Here’s last year’s photo.. I graduated in 2006, but the demographics are still about the same.. http://shhsband.com/images/shhsmbnd_clrgrd_lrgb.jpg

You make me want to go back and look at the pics like those from my childhood. Although I could swear we were alphabetically ordered.
As always, your posts surprise and astound me.

oh man, homeschooling. I feel so strongly about. But my version of homeschooling would be more like me going on for 50 minutes about something and Declan zoning out at about 30 seconds. Oh, like pretty much EVERYTHING I talk to him about.
