Just Give Her An Effing Donut And Some Coffee Already

This is probably what Paige is thinking as of late.

It’s day 10 of my new found “say yes!” lifestyle and I am going through a massive sugar & carb withdrawals. This is making me grumpy and I am starting to think that “say yes!” is the dumbest thing to ever come out of my mouth. You can’t just take a girl who was raised on Pepsi and Poptarts and expect her not feel like her head is going to start spinning around while spewing out fresh vegetables and whole grains like Regan from The Exorcist.

In between the chills and hallucinations, I have started fantasizing about foods like Twinkies and Sour Patch Kids and Cheetos. I didn’t even eat those foods before I was on a diet, but I still believe that feasting on a combination of the three will make my cravings disappear.

My head is also throbbing because, like a genius, I gave up drinking coffee as well.  This just makes me want to mainline an espresso and then mix up a ridiculously sweet cocktail where the glass is all rimmed with sugary goodness.  I am somehow convinced that this will: (a) make this headache go away and (b) help with my sugar jones and (c) who doesn’t want a cocktail anyway?

Nevermind that it is 2:46 am and I actually woke up because I AM HUNGRY. For the last hour or so, I’ve been pretending that my old standby will be waiting for me when I wake up:

Starbucks and Top Pot Old Fashioned

And in case you were wondering, that is not just a donut. That is a donut hand forged by magical little elves who are forced to work nights at this place in order to create the type of donuts that can’t sit in bags too long because the grease will sweat through the paper.

  1. Don’t worry, that horrible feeling will go away eventually, just get through it now and you will always remember how tough it was. Sugar is addictive. I’m such a feen for bad foods, but have managed to resist the temptation so far. By the way, Mizfit is awesome! And So is Roni!

  2. Wow, sugar AND coffee? I would lose my effing mind. Good luck! I have to find a happy medium, or I’ll just eventually give in and binge, and eat five times what I would’ve anyway!

  3. Oh that’s a bad combination. Why coffee?? I do try to limit myself to one cup (coffee, honey, milk) a day but zero?! I’d go nuts.

  4. Your body is rebelling against loss of sugar and caffeine. It’s going to kick your ass for a few days.

But it does get better. I promise.

I went through it myself a couple of months ago!

  5. Okay, I’m not even a big donut fan, but clicking through and beholding that apple fritter picture caused me to gain five pounds. I’m holding you responsible.

Perhaps we’ll have to have some sort of Wii Fit step-off to resolve this matter, or something.

  6. Resist!! Have some oatmeal made with milk and honey instead. You can do it! :)

  7. It is incredibly awesome that you wrote all that down, including the insane rationalizations we all have, instead of giving in to the cravings (and rationalizations!). Seriously. incredibly. awesome. :) You are definitely saying yes.

  8. I first read about you on CNN.com (I am a news junkie as well as a sugar junkie) and then I found your blog and started thinking that you sound an awful lot like me and that I wholeheartedly wish the best for you. Your blog introduced me to a whole world of weight loss blogs that, actually, inspired me to start my own!
I’m ‘saying yes’ to losing weight too, for the first real time, and I wanted to let you know that you are quite an inspirational lady.
    Good luck!

  9. Why did you plan to give up coffee in the first place? Good coffee doens’t need sugar! Go to Zoka or any of the other gorgeous coffee shops in Seattle that serve REAL great FRESH coffee! forget about Starbucks.
and… an answer to your candy craving just might be…. start baking! ha ha ha. Home made stuff is so much betyter and satisfying anyway. Go for the good stuff. dump the junk. it doesn’t taste good anyway.

  10. You gave up what? all at once? Should I politely ask, are you crazy or just really really brave? Wishing you good luck. You’re a much better woman than I.

  11. biggirl, makes a good point. try quiting, or better yet replacing, one thing at a time until you master each??

  12. Thanks everyone for the support and advice.

I agree that “leaning into” changes is the smart thing to do. However, I have issues with not getting enough sleep (weeks on end with 4 hours a night). I then end up drinking coffee to stay awake during the day. As a result, I have an even more difficult time falling asleep and so on and so on.

I thought I would stop drinking coffee and replace it with green tea. So far it seems like sleep is not alluding me as often. As a result, I am having wicked headaches that keep me awake. : )

  13. I LOVE grease-sweating doughnuts! Are you trying to kill me over here????
I haven’t had a doughnut in a year and I’m on the verge, I’m telling you, ON THE VERGE.

Anyway, good for you for all this healthy eating and coffee-giving-upping. It does get better (I speak from experience.) Can you have popcorn? That really helped me get over cravings.

Keep it up. You’re looking fab.

  14. Oh, honey, you are something else! I’m trying to lose the baby weight and coffee is the only thing that keeps me going. I miss the donuts. Oh, donuts. Sigh. As I ate my lunch of a boring turkey sandwich, celery and a tangerine, I daydreamed of cookies, Ruffles and chocolate frosting. To go on the Ruffles. So I feel ya on the cravings.

You’re gonna make it happen! Keep up the good work and keep telling all of us about it!
Made the Oprah meatballs today–they are great! I baked mine instead of frying, though, and also used the recipe to make a turkey meatloaf. Woo hoo!

  16. Those donuts and their website should be illegal! I got down to the Apple Fritter and was almost drooling!

I too cut out coffee – however once a week I allow myself a Skinny Mocha Latte from Starbucks. The donuts are easy to avoid because here in Germany while they have wonderful pastries – they don’t really have donuts like the states.

I also allow a ‘salty carb attack’ with Fat Free Sour Cream and Onion Pringles. And yeah…I count out the 14 chips to equal 70 calories and no fat – and I log them!

The headaches will ease off…it takes time to get over the withdrawl. When you do you’ll feel 100% better! I now only drink mineral water and caffeine free tea. And more water…a LOT of water. It helps keep the hungries away too.

  17. Why give up caffeine entirely? Green tea has the magical little antioxidants that are regaled for all their wonderful effects on our bodies. If you can handle it, straight-up black tea is wonderful, too — no need to add milk and sugar. My grandmother thinks I’m insane, but I can drink tea black like some people drink coffee black.

Do you like banana bread? You can make that stuff taste pretty good while still making it healthy. Good carbs and all that happiness.

  18. you can do it.

    SUGAR IS A HARSH MISTRESS.

I try and ignore her pleading for me to return (emphasis on try not success) but caffeine? never.
just found another study about caffeine and metabolism which is my new excuse why I wont surrender my morning cup.
