Smitten

At this point I feel like the most unromantic person that I know. It’s not that I shun romance, it’s just that for a while I had given up on love. I think that over the years I have been confused about what love was … perhaps I’ve read too many Jane Austen novels where every romance gets tied up in a neat bow and everyone ends up terribly happy. This has not been my experience. Love is usually hard to maintain and you gotta fight for it.

But then again, once in a while, you see “it.” The real stuff. And your heart gets a longing. And you realize that “it” does exist outside of books and off the silver screen.

I’m just smitten. I love our First Couple.

PS. I challenge you not to smile after watching that video.

  1. Agreed! That video gave me goosebumps all over again.

As for this: “Love is usually hard to maintain and you gotta fight for it.” Le sigh. So true. I’m fighting for it right now. But it is totally worth it.

  2. I’m not smiling. I’m weeping. Well, almost. They are a lovely couple!!! Truly are!
What can I tell ya? I think I have a great partner in my life. Heck, if we ever get divorced I don’t think I’ll hook up with any other guy because I can’t believe anyone will be better for me than him. But! We fight for it too, and work on it a lot, and talk and talk and talk, and sometimes we cry…
I’m sure the Obamas were there too. It’s a long road. Now we see them when they are strong and so together. They have to over the other stuff to get to the point where they are now. And I can only imagine how together you must be with someone in order to go thru all the stress and pressure that it takes to get to the White House.
So, no, I don’t think it’s a fairy tale. Sorry to spoil this for you everyone… but it takes two smart people who really really want to be with each other.

  3. Yeah, I failed your test. I want to marry Barack Obama, but he already has the best woman ever. Now they are the best couple.

  4. It's All in the Mindsays:

Being a “happily” married woman who loves her husband greatly (and he loves her), I’d have to say that although True Love does exist … reality of love isn’t like the books or silver screen. The “honeymoon” stage (which is like the books and movies) only lasts for a bit and then real life sets in … full of wars and triumphs, broken-heartedness and bonding strength. And like life, it flows in phases and the love itself transforms as time goes by.
Being apart from his family so much, I’m sure the Obamas had their share of difficulties and heart-ache. It’s never a fairy-tale. But you know, sometimes … SOMETIMES … reality, with all it’s guts and glory, can be much better than a fairy tale. There is a certain romance in OVERCOMING the harsh realities of life. Same goes for relationships.
Don’t mean to sound cliche-ish … but when the timing is right (may not be YOUR timing though), the right person will come into your life. In the meantime, you’re on the right track of learning to love yourself and your daughter. Focus on what’s right and the rest will fall into place.

  5. I think I love them too! They are so cute together its insane!

  8. I am admittedly far more cynical about love than I probably should be. I suppose having a couple of failed relationships will do that to a person. However, seeing the Obamas together reaffirms to me that it is possible to have a seemingly wonderful relationship full of love & respect. Perhaps one day I will find that kind of relationship, too. I *heart* the First Family. :)

  9. They are FANTASTIC!I was telling a friend of mine the other day that one of my favorite thing about THE PRESIDENT (gosh, I just love saying that!) is his obvious love for his wife and daughters. I’m also pretty thrilled that he has young kids. As a new parent, that is super important to me in a leader–he understands my life!

  10. Isn’t love grand?? It is fantastic for everyone to see how this couple openly loves one another and it makes me want to be a better ‘other half’. I agree with most of the comments above…love is truly great and I feel fortunate to be a solid relationship but it is something that we both work at on an ongoing basis. There are lovely romantic moments sure, but we know that if we stop communicating and connecting with one another, we hit rocky patches. It’s obvious that the Obamas work at their union and what a wonderful message for all of us and our children.
Also, just read your post about that mean e-mail and LOVED your response. Just keep moving forward and the haters can kiss our asses!!!

  13. just happened to watch LOST IN AUSTEN (4, one hour each, part series that is just excellent) this week – if you love Jane, I think you will really like it.

  14. I think America is having a love affair with the Obamas. And I thought America loved the Clintons! Although, Bill never looked at Hilary that way …
