Ugh. The “Before” Photo

January 12th, 2009

Here to pushing the boundaries beyond my normal level of comfort … the dreaded full body shot. Holy shit.

Oprah recently declared that she had been avoiding the “full body shot” for the cover of O Magazine all year because she felt insecure and ashamed of her recent weight gain. I can completely relate to her on this one (this is probably the only point that I can fathom relating to Oprah on) … I have been avoiding the full body shot for years. YEARS, I tell you.

Apparently a billion dollars cannot buy you happiness or make you skinny. But I already knew that for the most part. Personally, I have spent a small fortune on diet aids like weight loss supplements, gym memberships that I never used, books, exercise dvds, protein shakes. You name it. And let’s not talk about clothes, I have a whole range of sizes in my closet from emaciated to bloated to beached whale. I can’t imagine what a billion dollars can buy you in weight loss paraphernalia. Kudos for her for not getting the fat vacuumed out of her like the rest of them.

Here’s my weekly update. I wish I had the foresight to take a “before” picture last week when this whole weight loss thing blew up, but this will have to do.

weighin_011209

Just so you know, I have been faithfully logging in my caloric intake on a daily basis and sticking to a regime of 1200 – 1400 calories. Except for on Sunday, when I totally went off the deep end and started stuffing my face full of carbs … something that I am trying to avoid. Luckily I tossed out most of the temptation foods already and avoided a complete derailment.

I also went to the gym 5 out of 7 days last week. This is amazing to me. On one day, I actually went twice. We must be coming close to the apocalypse.

As I was telling my friends Betsy and Kim and my fellow blogger Sharyn – should CNN choose to fly me to the mothership and interview me live (hint. hint.) I swear to God I will burst out of a fat photo of myself in all of it’s glory. Then I will dance to Flo Rida with Wolf Blitzer.

From your initial description the full body shot sounded like it was going to be scary. But the picture itself is not scary. You have done great in the last week. Your story caught my eye because you have similar goals. I want to make more time for myself and avoid the stressful cycles that have been taking away my health. You are in the right direction. Woo Hoo..

    Thanks for sharing.

I actually do think that I look better than I did when first uploaded my iReport video. That video was taken after some heavy drinking over the holidays and I think I look bloated.

Anyway, you guys rock. I can’t even say what it means to hear the nice words. It doesn’t get old. Seriously.

And you lurkers out there reading this. You guys rock too. : )

Hi! We are very close in where we are goal and weight wise. I weigh 181.5 and want to get down to 140ish. Less would be nice but I am being realistic. You look fantastic! Your before pic is much kinder than mine :-) You must be taller than me! I have bookmarked you and look forward to sharing in your journey as I take mine as well! Here is to a thinner “us” in 2009!

Wow, that’s a good deal of progress in a week, and even with Sunday you absolutely have done a fabulous job of sticking to your plan. Go you!

I agree with MizFit — you have awesome graphic skills, and you look good in your picture. Of course, do what you’ve gotta do for your inside and yourself because that’s the most important part.

That’s a good loss for the week. Focus on staying consistent day to day, then the weeks will pile up and eventually the months and boom! Weight loss…and health.

From where did you lose the inches?

I envy that you’re able to step on the scale… I have learned in the last 3 years that doing so throws me right off track (holy yo-yo) so I’m sticking to my no scale rule and trusting that the closet full of clothing that doesn’t fit will let me know when I’ve succeeded.

You look great, keep up the good work!

I have a friend that always says that there’s always going to be an “ER” no matter what. Somebody that is prettiER, smartER, skinniER.

It’s hard not to get trapped in that cycle of not appreciating our bodies for the way they look right now. Funny how that goes. Having difficultly looking at my own picture is a self esteem issues. I can’t even be objective about it, though I am trying.

PS. @Tigermom, the total inches lost is based on subtracting my hip, thigh, waist measurements from the prior week and then adding those together. If that makes any sense.

I know you’re doing this challenge for your health and just personal happiness, but you should know you look so great in this “before” photo. Really no need for an “after,” but I support you in the quest for personal well-being, and not just trying to be on some diet or cleanse or whatever is annoying and trendy at the moment ;)
