Pressing The Confirm Button

Yesterday I had another defining moment. I know, I know, I’ve had a series of defining moments over the past year but really, this was another one.

I bought a plane ticket to New Orleans. For four days. Without Paige.

I can tell you all the reasons why I decided to go – my friend is going there for a corporate conference so the hotel is free, a round trip ticket was only $288, the palm reader told me to do it, I resolved that this would be the year of saying “yes” to new experiences, I can’t live another year without trying beignets at Cafe Du Monde. I could go on and on. But the reason that this such a defining moment  is because the” old me” would have sat there and listed all the reasons why I couldn’t go. And I never did go anywhere.

These days, I can’t wait to go places. I am planning a trip to Anchorage and San Francisco for the summer. And of course there is Korea. And Italy. I am going to keep pressing the confirm button on those travel arrangements because I am no longer going to be one of those people who lament about how much they love to travel and how they wish they did it more. I’m going.

  1. Congratulations!

You know, Houston is just a few hours’ drive away … just sayin’. ;)

  2. I hear the very best cannoli are made in Sicily. I don’t remember what part of Italy claims to have the best tiramisu (although I don’t recall the whole story behind that exquisite little dish). Of course, there are probably all sorts of fun fashions there, and lots of fun things. May I please live vicariously through you when you go to Italy?

  3. I highly recommend Jacques-Imo’s – best dinner around!

  4. YAY! Nawlins is awesome. Be sure to pack your dancing shoes and grab a Voodoo Daquiri at Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop for me.

  5. I want to share an excerpt from my personal blog, written last year at this time:

“I have been saying for a very long time that we needed a real vacation. My 28th birthday was coming. His one year anniversary on the job was coming. I had finished a year and a half of midwifery school and was (am) feeling very, very tired and stressed, and spring break was coming. We were tired of waiting for the right moment to go somewhere…the right jobs, the right amount of savings… the right car…the right whatever. We said, let’s do it. NOW. And so I started looking for tickets… to Paris! One night I happened upon a good price ($500, including all taxes and fees) and I turned to him and said, “we goin?” He said “yep.”

Me: “Push the button?” The button was the mouse…I was ready to click on “purchase.”

    Him: “Yep.”

    Me: “Push the button?!”

    Him: “Push the button!!!”

And so it began. We had nonrefundable tickets to Paris for spring break and would be departing in less than 2 months!”

So, I TOTALLY get this post, and I say to you RIGHT ON!!!! We had an amazing time, and I hope you have the same :o )

  6. I grew up in south Louisiana, so it holds a special place in my heart. You will love it. Eat lots and don’t be afraid to try anything! The beingets will be worth the cost of the trip, I promise. Don’t forget the chicory coffee. Happy travels!!

  7. Good for YOU. I am 43 as of yesterday and my life goals are now to travel as much as I can. Travel is so good for the soul, totally mind expanding and so … WORTH IT. I have never gone on a vacation I have regretted. You?

  8. Good for you! Congrats on taking the steps forward to doing something for YOU!

  9. But when? When are you going? I’ll be there tomorrow through 5/4. I also 2nd Jacques-Imo’s and Fiorella’s in the quarter (by Margaritaville) for Fried Chicken, Port of Call on Esplanade and Dauphine for burgers and monsoons, Molly’s (across from Margaritaville) for bloody mary’s and DBA for Paul Sanchez. If you do go uptown for Jacques, try Carrollton Station and the Maple Leaf for music/bars.

I love New Orleans and visit frequently. I highly recommend Commander’s Palace (a New Orleans institution), Emeril’s Delmonico and Brennan’s. You should also ride the trolley through the Garden District and visit the Voodoo shop. You’ll have a great time!

  11. Sounds awesome! Have a great time.

I live in New Orleans. The secret to New Orleans is – get out of the French Quarter. The French Quarter is the section of town that New Orleanians rope off for tourists. It’s historical, and there’s lots to do – but not NEARLY as cool as the real New Orleans… The ones the locals keep to themselves.

    Things you MUST do:

Frenchmen Street. (All the Local musicians play here. Great shows every night. Bourbon street is just a bunch of crappy cover bands.)

Snake’n'Jakes Christmas Bar. A generator, a strand of Christmas lights, and alcohol. The ULTIMATE dive bar.

Dick and Jenny’s. A New Orleans neighborhood restaurant off of Tchoupitoulas (Chop-i-too-lus). AMAZING food.

See the Rebirth Brass Band on Thursday nights at the Maple Leaf… or if not there -just see them anywhere.

Read up on the Mardi Gras Indians, check out the BackStreet Museum, and see the Indians perform if you get a chance.

…and of course Beignets at Cafe du Monde.
