8th Grade Graduation

Since when did 8th grade graduation become such pomp and circumstance? You would think that these kids collectively published a paper on quantum physics, the way we carry on about graduating from 8th grade! What the hell?

I have a friend whose child went to Victoria, British Columbia for 5th grade graduation. That’s right – CANADA. For FIFTH GRADE graduation. I also recall that there was squabbling over the of purchase of a balloon arch. I am completely serious about this. Do you think that your kid would remember and cherish a balloon arch? My kid can’t even remember to take the garbage to the curb even though she’s been doing it on the same day for 4 years now. FOUR.

Why? Why? Why?

Sigh.

They do look lovely though.

Lovely enough for prom or something.

  1. I had no idea making the leap to high school was such a big deal. Well, whatever works, right?

  2. your daughter is just so beautiful! but seriously… 8th grade is a HUGE deal! No longer “junior high”. ;)

  3. All Hail West Seattle! I too am having an emotional affair with my pre twins/pre marriage/pre house neighborhood of Lower Queen Anne. And I can’t believe you got a pic of the skeleton drummer I drive by every day.

  4. Isn’t it crazy! My daughter is only two. I’m afraid to know what 8th Grade Graduation is going to be like in 12 years (is that right!?) when Moanna “graduates” from 8th grade! Graduating is expensive enough when you graduate from high school and college… Maybe this whole hoopla is a way to get parents to spend more money on stuff!?

And yes they look like they should be going to prom! Cute girls, but wow they look older than 8th Grade!

More like “why why why” do they have to grow up so quickly???? None of the girls in my 8th grade graduating class looked like that (especially not me). They look like they’re ready to party at the Hilton for a cocktail party! My oh my have times changed.

  6. Congrats to Paige…and to you! Wow, I didn’t realize 8th grade graduation was such a big deal. I remember a looong time ago when I was in 8th grade, some people rented a limo on the last day of school and rode around Baton Rouge (cause THAT’s fun), but that was about as fancy as it got. The times, they are a’changin’.

  8. Your so right! How cute though. I love the picture! It’s a bit scarey at the same time though. I mean your daughter is wearing a pretty cocktail dress and heels now. When I was in the eight, the code was still anckle legnth church dress and flats. My daughter’s four, I can only pray to GOD that when she hits eight, bras and daisy dukes wont be the high fashion thing. Love the post. I added yout o my blogroll. Your fun to follow. Lol

  9. LOL and the sad thing is it starts earlier than 8th grade! Let’s see kindergarten “graduation” ,6th grade ” graduation” ,then 8th and so on! By the time they REALLY graduate a parent is worn out!

  10. I am a teacher in BC and the schools in my district go K-7, and most schools where I have taught no longer do a Grade 7 “Graduation.” More are doing a Grade 7 leaving ceremony which makes a lot more sense to me…sort of a farewell to the old school where the kids in K give each Grade 7 a carnation to wish them well. Makes a lot more sense to me than calling it a grad, because they haven’t actually completed anything yet, they’ve still got 5 more years of school ahead of them!

I don’t get this graduation ceremony stuff people are doing. I thought “graduation” was for college or high school. I mean, isn’t this a bit much?

    Paige is beautiful.

  12. So was it an oversight that, for generations upon generations, we felt it appropriate to celebrate only high school and college graduations? Is it part of our dumbing-down culture? Our everybody-on-the-team-gets-a-prize culture? A pageant-happy culture? And why is a significant gift expected? Is it the result of successive generations of wealth and expectations (which has just come to a screeching halt)? We are seeing kindergarten graduations. Fifth grade graduations. Are they all warranted? It just stymies me. Maybe it has become a coming-of-age thing, akin to the bar/bat mitzvah. Enlightenment would be welcome.
