The other day I was going pee and I didn’t shut the door. Paige saw me and let out a huge gasp.
“MMOOOOMMMM!!!!”
You would have thought that I had committed some sort of crime in front of her. And perhaps I did [in her mind]. For a few seconds before covering her eyes, she saw the side profile of my lower half sans clothing, while on the toilet. Apparently, that’s enough to scar a teenager.
I got to thinking about that moment and why she was so freaked out about it and it donned on me … I WAS NEVER NAKED AROUND HER. EVER. I chalk it up to (a) being raised in a conservative Asian family (primarily by a single father) and (b) weird body/self-esteem issues but I never want to be seen in shorts, let alone nekkid. It’s just the way things were.
Nowadays, I am becoming much more self confident about the way my body looks. Not much as changed physically, just my attitude. And in some respects, I haven’t had a choice. It has been effing hot up here and I’ve had to just face the fact that pants are not an option when it is 103 degrees outside. I am walking around the house wearing as little as possible out of utility and it’s really helped me to be more comfortable with being exposed altogether. Thanks mother nature for roasting the hell out of us Seattleites.
And Paige, get used to seeing the wobbly bits. Love, Mom.

Lol, that’s too funny. Teenagers have such an increased sense of embarrassment.
Isn’t it usually much cooler — even in the summer — in Seattle? Holy moly, that’s ridiculously hot!
That is crazy hot! I think a mom’s view of her own body and her self confidence rubs off on her daughters. I find myself thinking about my body in the same unhealthy way my mother thinks about hers. This is something I actively work on and don’t want the family low self esteem to rub off on my daughters. Good for you for becoming more confident and happy with your own body, even the wobbly bits.
Funny subject. As mommy of two still young girls, I take them with me in the public bathrooms. And just a few days ago while in a very crowded public bathroom my younger one squeals, “Mommy!!! Your belly and butt is sooooo BIG!!!” (followed by uncontrollabe giggling). They also tend to announce when I’m on my period too.
Happy times!
I grew up in similar circumstance with 2 really old-fashioned koh-rean parents and if I went out without my socks on, I felt naked. lol. Today, my 4 year old loves going au naturel and I let her. Now that she’s older, I don’t let her out of the house anymore without clothes (who knows who’s taking pics out there!) but inside the house, she rules the roost and anything goes. Well, almost. : )
At this stage, who da fack cares anymore except to take care of your mind and body for health’s sake. Own it! Cuz you lookin’ pretty good lady!

Love this topic!
I’m ALL about being naked. I’m barely modest at all — I’ve been known to change my pants in front of company, all sorts of silliness.
Even though I’ve had a baby now and everything is squishy and floppy, I don’t worry about my family seeing me.
I hope my daughter will have fabulous ideas about her body image and will never feel self conscious.

Lucky for me, after years of training, the teen understands that there are times I will be naked in my own stinking bathroom and she should probably stay clear or risk the consequences. Nope, what really embarrasses her…even the mildest PDA with my boyfriend. (Seriously.)
And we spend much of our time trying to keep her covered. How dare she flaunt her firm youthful body after ruining mine!

my son is 7.5 and I’m still sorta open about being naked. in our old house, the doors are all off-kilter and don’t really close so privacy is kinda makeshift. he’s only recently begun mentioning some kind of discomfort, but really I’m only naked in the house when I’m in my room, getting dressed, so it’s really his fault if he barges in and sees something he’d rather not. I’ll make sure to mention that to his therapist.

MY kids see me naked all the time, my oldest one is eight and she will periodically stare at me and ask me, “Why are you so chicky?” and then she laughs hysterically. Apparently chicky is her word for flab…
It’s great that you feel more comfortable in your own skin!
Cheers,
Anita

So this is strange to many, but my mother undressed in front of me throughout my entire life, even to this day. I have always seen my mom naked. She also doesn’t close the door when she uses the bathroom. Funnily enough, my mom still does this even though my fiance lives and shares the house with us. He’s walked in on her using the bathroom, not once, but TWICE and she just laughs it off. I can’t help but laugh it off either. My fiance however is a little scarred and will make all sorts of noise and banging and warnings as he makes his way to the bathroom so he can absolutely be sure no one is in there.

I saw my mom naked or half naked as a child, but as a teenager I have decided one day – that’s enough. Maybe it’s about this age and setting new boundaries, wanting to be your own person, independant, and taking one step farther from your parents.

That’s so funny because we call it “nakkey” too!
The nakedness in our family was a gender specific thing. I never saw my Dad naked, but what’s a little mom boob, eh?
Our son is 17 months old so I still change/bathe in front of him, but he’s definitely starting to become more body aware. For instance, the other day he tried to “boop” my boobie the way we “boop” belly buttons. So that’s got me thinking about this subject, and wondering at what point things will have to change.

My mom totally took me to the bathroom with her. The first time I did that with my boyfriend he was shocked and screamed “Baby! Close the door! People can see you!” After almost 7 years, he’s over it. God knows what will happen if we have children.

Too funny! A couple of weeks ago, I put on shorts for the first time this summer. As we were getting ready to go out, my seven year old son started giggling. Then my 9 year old daughter joined in. My son exclaimed, “Mom, I don’t really think that your the sort of person who wears shorts.” I’ve decided their reaction was because it was something out of the ordinary, not because I looked so ridiculous in the shorts.
