When Paige informed me that she and her friend Beatrice were going to be an “angel and devil” pair for Halloween, I immediately assumed that Paige would be the angel.
Right? Right?
Wrong.
Well, I would have never wanted to be the “angel” either. It’s too much pressure to be good all of the time. As a teenager, I was always the one to take risks, gravitate towards the edge and jump feet first into new situations – often to my own detriment. To sum it up, I was “trouble.” Or more aptly, I was troubled.
I don’t think I could have raised the teenage “me.” I was a hot mess back then (and sometimes still am). But despite the acting out and rebellion, in the end I’ve tried – Lord knows I’ve tried – to always do the right thing.
Paige, on the other hand, doesn’t even try to be good all of the time. She tries to be good most of the time. She understands the fallibility of the human condition and just tries to do her best. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t and she’s generally at peace with either outcome. She is much more evolved than I was at her age.
So don’t let those devilish horns fool you. She may not be perfect all of the time, but she’s been my angel for the past 15 years.

Just wanted to say…Paige is gorgeous.
Of course she is an angel. Not fooled ny the horns for one sec. And i don’t even know her… (maybe some day?). And she is beautiful! Took it from her mom

I concur–the devil horns aren’t fooling anybody.
You’re obviously a great mom to be raising such an “evolved” girl.

One year I dressed up as “good and evil.” I had horns and wings; it was fitting. I think we all need to accept and embrace the angel and devil that is inside of us. No one is perfect all the time, and sometimes being a little bad makes us better in the long run.

I’ve been following along ever since you were first published on CNN earlier in the year. I just wanted to say, since you’ve posted several photos of Paige lately, that your daughter is gorgeous. Such a beautiful girl and her attitude sounds fantastic for someone her age. Thanks for sharing all you do on your blog. You and Paige sound like wonderful, fun people.

How do we do it? My daughter is much wiser than I was at her age, too. We’re blessed.

Your daughter is stunning! And I live in fear that my son will someday be the teenage me. You know, as punishment.

Your daughter is beautiful. As a Mom to a teenager, you might appreciate my blog – I blogged about Hoochie Momma Halloween Costumes! I am enjoying your blog, as well.

I don’t know you or your daughter, but it sounds like you’re doing an amazing job raising her in sometimes less than ideal conditions. I’m sure she’s doing so well because she knows how loved she is.
Great picture! Yeah, even my nine year old seems so much more together than I was at her age. Hell–sometimes she’s more together than I am now.
You’ve obviously done a fantastic job of raising your daughter if she can have such an amazing perspective on life during her teenage years. Kudos to you–I hope I’m able to do the same.
