Detaching From the Mothership

15!?!

To think that 14 was 365 days ago is mind boggling.

To think that I’ve kept another living being alive for over 5,400 days is something that I can’t even wrap my brain around.

I can barely keep fish alive.

Don’t even get me started on plants.

But then again, I don’t even know if I can keep the credit for keeping her alive anymore. I mean, Paige can now cook frozen pizzas, spaghetti and ramen – so it’s safe to say that she won’t starve. And soon, as she so readily reminded me the other day, she will be able to drive and won’t really rely on me for schlepping her around anymore.

Paige: 6 months till I can take driver’s ed!

Me: Whaaaaa??

Paige:Driver’s ed, Mom. You know, so I can learn how to drive?

Me: You don’t need to know how to drive, I take you everywhere.

Paige: Mom, this is good. I can start driving myself places and you won’t have to worry about picking me up.

Me: But we only have one car.

Paige: Yeah, I know. You can ride the bus and I’ll drive.

  1. Before you know it you’ll be packing up her things and dropping her off at college…

  2. Paige is one of the most beautiful girls I’ve ever seen. And it’s not just that she’s gorgeous (she is) it’s a special glow she has. I can’t even imagine how proud of her you must be.

  3. I am a regular reader but have never commented. I just have to say, you have one seriously beautiful daughter – I think the same thing any time you show her picture!

  4. Happy Birthday Paige!

It’s unbelievable how much children change in just the course of a year. When I look at pictures of Moanna I can’t even recognize her in some of them. I can’t imagine what she will look like or be into when she’s 15.

PS. There are very few plants that have ever survived in my care. You’re not alone

  5. “Yeah, I know. You can ride the bus and I’ll drive.” – Oh, shnap! Happy birthday to Paige and congratulations on keeping her alive for 5,400 days. That IS huge when you put it that way and compare it to fish and plants. Wow.

  8. Oh man, how exciting and scary at the same time. I can’t wait for my kids to grow and be more independent, and at the same time I fear it.

I’m telling you, this driving thing is a nightmare. Good for weight loss though, makes me nauseous everytime I ride with my daughter. Happy Birthday Paige

  11. Happy birthday Paige! Whoa… love her last comment. haha! I’m sure it was said with a straight-face & pure confidence. Love it! Look at her! She’s a beautiful kid, inside and out. Good luck with the driving… hehehe.

  12. Wow. She’s 15! That must be incredible – in a “I can’t believe that my daughter is a teenager and growing into an adult before my eyes” kind of way.

My lil muffin is only 6 months old. I still can’t get my head around the fact that she will eventually be someone who eats pizza, talks on the phone, learns to drive!! Eeek.

  15. Ah… it was only days ago:

“No, you can’t go anywhere until you do your laundry”
    “But…”
    “No.”
    “Oh my god…mom!”
    “NO.”
“Can’t you do it for me?”
“No, you are 15 years old, you will do your own laundry”
“So? Why can’t you do i for me? Is it really that hard?”
“Apparently, it’s been a month since you did it last”
“Mom, seriously, what else do do all day?”

    Deeeeeeeeeep breath.

  16. Beautiful picture. The time flies by.
