It’s Gonna Be Just Fine

December 1st, 2009

There are times when I lose hope and just want to strangle Paige to death because she’s so frustrating to me. Then I hang out with a herd of teenagers and I figure, respective to the lot of them – she’s doing just fine.

When Paige was in Kindergarten, I enrolled her in a Spanish Immersion school. At this point, she is pretty fluent and only took Spanish in middle school for the practice.

The other day, she was helping a friend with her Spanish grammar and I asked the question:

Me: Paige, do you ever dream in Spanish?

Paige: Yeah, sometimes. I used to when I was in elementary school, but now, not so much.

[Unnamed] Friend: What does that mean?

Paige: What do you mean?

Friend:
Dreaming in Spanish?

Paige: You know, when you have a dream and everyone is speaking in Spanish.

Friend: Why would I dream in Spanish? I don’t even speak Spanish.

Paige: Duh. You only speak English. I speak Spanish and sometimes dream in Spanish.

Friend: Sometimes I have dreams and there are Mexicans in them. Is that the same?

Hahaha! Awesome. And dang, hanging out with a herd of teenagers sounds awfully daunting, but I’ll be there myself before much longer.

    That made my day.

It also reminded of the time that I was in marketing class and we were looking at an advertisements from Greece (where our teacher was from). Some brilliant soul said, “What does that say in American?”

OMG, that is hilarious. I’m trying not to laugh too hard at work. On another note, that’s awesome that you put her in a Spanish immersion class. The 3-4 years I took Soanish in HS and college did very little for me. It only comes out when I’ve been in Mexico for a week and have drunk enough to get it out of me. I think (just my personal opinion) early exposure goes a longer way. It’s great that she’s retained it. On another note, I think if I dreamt in Spanish all scenarios would be so much moe sexier or dramatic ;)
