Hairology

For the past 7 years I have been in this endless cycle of growing my hair out to get a perm and then cutting it short because I get so sick of having to maintain long straight hair. Plus, I’ve always told myself that I would get a perm as a reward for when I lost all the post baby weight. Obviously, that hasn’t happened. And in case you are wondering – Paige is just shy of 16 YEARS OLD. This basically means that I have grown my hair out almost as much as I have yo-yo dieted.

Almost.

This past Saturday I chopped off 6 inches of hair. Given that my hair is twice as thick as normal people’s hair, the pile of locks on the floor was the size of a small cat. It actually looked like I had pulled a Britney and shaved all my hair off.

In order to save money, I generally go to the Gary Manuel Advanced Training Salon. The real Gary Manuel salon charges you some obscene amount for a haircut, while the training salon charges something that a single mother with a kid heading to college can afford. But this Saturday, that salon was completely booked up (we are in a recession) and because I was desperate, the receptionist on the phone suggested that I try the G.M. Aveda Institute (a.k.a. “The Beauty School”). Throwing caution to the wind, I went for it.

Now, this is where you expect things to take a bad, bad turn. I have, as I am sure you have, heard plenty of nightmare “never again” stories about going to beauty schools. But I am here to tell you that I had an awesome experience thanks to MoonSun, my new favorite Korean hair stylist. I heart MoonSun!

At the risk of sounding like an ass, having an asian person cut your hair made all the difference in the world. Seriously! She knew exactly what to do with my coarse unmanageable broomstick locks. And when I opined about getting a perm, instead of hearing her gasp with digust like most people in the salon industry, she said, “Yes! Let’s do it! Not now, but once your hair grows out again! I love me some waves!” MoonSun is a goddess. A perm loving goddess.

The only thing that sullied the moment was when the “attending teacher” lamented that we didn’t do a “before” and “after” picture because apparently, I really looked like shit before MoonSun got a hold of me. I’ll try not to let that get to me, as I grow out my hair again to get a perm.

Keep Vashon Weird

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

I have a friend in law school right now and as part of his class, they discuss prior court cases that are complex and noteworthy. It just so happens that they are currently discussing a case that involves my home turf – Vashon Island. When the judge who oversaw the court proceedings came to speak about the case, he started out the conversation with, “You never want to have a case in Vashon – those people are weird. First of all, they live on an island ….”

It’s pretty hard to argue with him – our local coffee shop sells bumper stickers that actually say, “KEEP VASHON WEIRD.” AND they do it proudly. It’s actually one of the many charms about living in this rural island community.

Despite the colorful people that live here, there are still folks that you wonder about. For instance, there’s this guy who has a hook where his hand should be. I’ve always wondered how it happened, but a recent article in the Seattle PI kept me waiting no more:

Gray Hair

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

Just the other day my friend Matt and I were walking down the ferry dock together and had this conversation:

Matt: Wait! I see a gray hair.
Me: Yes, the have been appearing with greater frequency.
Matt: I hope your whole head of hair turns white.
Me: That is the meanest thing anyone has ever said to me.
Matt: I mean, I think it would look cool.
Me: Dude, I am only 36. I have a long way to go.

But it’s true. Gray hairs have been popping up all over my head. It wouldn’t been so obvious if I had say, BLONDE HAIR. But I am Asian and my hair is black. What can I do? They are sprouting up and multiplying all over the place. I can’t stop it, I can only get rid of them.

My friend Rene, who is a bit superstitious, snips her gray hair at the scalp. Why doesn’t she just pluck them out? Well, I am glad you asked! She heard that if you pluck one gray hair out, 10 more will sprout out in it’s place. It may be superstitious, but she’s not taking any chances.

I attribute the arrival of more gray hair to my increased anxiety over being a parent. Man, I thought those diaper years were hard. In retrospect, babies can’t drive, don’t talk back and are generally congenial when they’ve been burped and their diapers have been changed. Teenagers on the otherhand are crafty – they pretend like they don’t need you even though they really do. They test your boundaries and all your patience. It’s annoying.

I wish I had some sort of handbook for raising teenagers (any suggestions?) or a parent of my own to ask advice from, but I don’t. I can only proceed hoping that I don’t mess things up too bad. Gah! I have a headache.
