Hairology

For the past 7 years I have been in this endless cycle of growing my hair out to get a perm and then cutting it short because I get so sick of having to maintain long straight hair. Plus, I’ve always told myself that I would get a perm as a reward for when I lost all the post baby weight. Obviously, that hasn’t happened. And in case you are wondering – Paige is just shy of 16 YEARS OLD. This basically means that I have grown my hair out almost as much as I have yo-yo dieted.

Almost.

This past Saturday I chopped off 6 inches of hair. Given that my hair is twice as thick as normal people’s hair, the pile of locks on the floor was the size of a small cat. It actually looked like I had pulled a Britney and shaved all my hair off.

In order to save money, I generally go to the Gary Manuel Advanced Training Salon. The real Gary Manuel salon charges you some obscene amount for a haircut, while the training salon charges something that a single mother with a kid heading to college can afford. But this Saturday, that salon was completely booked up (we are in a recession) and because I was desperate, the receptionist on the phone suggested that I try the G.M. Aveda Institute (a.k.a. “The Beauty School”). Throwing caution to the wind, I went for it.

Now, this is where you expect things to take a bad, bad turn. I have, as I am sure you have, heard plenty of nightmare “never again” stories about going to beauty schools. But I am here to tell you that I had an awesome experience thanks to MoonSun, my new favorite Korean hair stylist. I heart MoonSun!

At the risk of sounding like an ass, having an asian person cut your hair made all the difference in the world. Seriously! She knew exactly what to do with my coarse unmanageable broomstick locks. And when I opined about getting a perm, instead of hearing her gasp with digust like most people in the salon industry, she said, “Yes! Let’s do it! Not now, but once your hair grows out again! I love me some waves!” MoonSun is a goddess. A perm loving goddess.

The only thing that sullied the moment was when the “attending teacher” lamented that we didn’t do a “before” and “after” picture because apparently, I really looked like shit before MoonSun got a hold of me. I’ll try not to let that get to me, as I grow out my hair again to get a perm.

  1. Must be in the air — I took all my hair off this weekend, too, and really *did* pull a Britney.

I keep marveling how LIGHT my head feels now. It’s like 20 pounds lifted from my neck.

  2. Giyen, I beseech you — no perm! I know you’re too young to remember when perms were the rage, but as a college freshman every girl I knew had a perm. Week one was fine, but then every week subsequent to that, their hair morphed further into a coarse-textured mop resembling a worn-out Brillo wool pad. Just sayin’…

  4. Love that fact you did you did the chop! Way to go. I love short hair on most people. I have it now but normally my hair is long. Need a pic now to see how great you look! By the way. I am sure you looked great before the hair cut too. Just probably such a drastic change w/ the length and all. Chin up!

  5. while I like my stylist, there’s nothing like having an asian lady cut asian hair. They really understand the way it moves (?) somehow. :)

  6. Which reminds me, I really, REALLY need a hair cut! I have been to the, oh, what’s it called here?, Baldwin Beauty school (that’s it!) here and it was fine, but I can’t say that I’ve ever really had a great experience with any sylist, ever! So, I guess if I’m ever in the area (haha, I live in Texas), I’ll go check it out! :)

  7. Yes, I want a photo of the hair in question. The broomstick hair.

Also, don’t wait. Just get the perm and maybe the baby weight will follow. Good Luck!

  8. I’m going to be needing an after picture!

Paige turning 16 makes me feel old… My youngest brother (he’s much younger than I am) started high school this year and I’m like “Dude! I used to give baths in the sink!”

  9. I know exactly how you feel. For years I went to non-Asian stylists. Then I woke up and realized maybe the reason I was getting such lousy haircuts was because Korean hair is different….guess what, it is! Been going to my Korean sylist for three years and she is awesome. My problem is my hair is pretty wavy and can be a bit unmanageable…my hair texture definitely changed after I had my son 9 years ago, so I try and straighten it when I have the time, which is usually once or twice a month. Glad you found an awesome stylist. Hope the perm looks great, would love to see photos.
