Run, Bacon, Run

While I was in the car today I was listening to a show on our local public radio station called “Sound Focus.” Today’s show featured an interview (about 33 minutes into the show) of a writer/blogger named Shauna James Ahern, also known as the Gluten Free Girl. It was a great to hear her talk on this rainy Seattle day and there were a couple of great quotes that I took away from it:

“Understanding your own story is the most beautiful parts of all this … when you finally feel well, the possibilities are endless.”

and …

“Remind myself to say “yes” in every moment as it arises exactly as it is, instead of always longing for it to be something different.” Continue reading ‘Run, Bacon, Run’

Holy Moley!

Okay, what I really wanted to say is “HOLY SHIT!” but BlogHerAds limits you from using profanity in the title of a blog post. And you know what? I totally respect that - but a big HOLY SHIT anyways.

Today I got an email from a person down in the Los Angeles area who thinks I am kinda funny and emailed me about participating in a blogger panel. (I would talk about it more, but I don’t want to jinx it.) Honestly, irregardless if it goes anywhere I feel sublimely grateful for the compliment. I’ve spent a whole lifetime being someone who is grossly self-defeating, so to accept a compliment is an unbelievably big step in my personal journey. Hopefully, you’ll hear more about this opportunity in the future and if you don’t, please send bottles of Makers Mark my way. Of course, you always have the option of sending over a bottle of MM anytime - no reason necessary.

I have a stack of essays to read as a judge for a middle school essay contest, so tonight I’ll leave you with this new song tormenting me (sent by Jen).  It will burn your ears, make you want to do a shot of tequila and then bend over and say 10 Hail Mary’s:

MOTORING!!!!!!!! I had no idea that was a word.

Everything Is Better With Bacon

My friend Aimee Greeblemonkey (a.k.a. “The Stalker”) sent me this photo she took of a framed bacon t-shirt that was hanging on the wall at Steuben’s - a diner-esque restaurant that serves it up old school style. Here’s a peak at their menu:

For a more legible version, check here.

You can tell this is a quality place based on the fact that they have one of my favorite things - grits add cheddar and of course, bacon! I think they put that t-shirt on the wall to remind everyone to order a side of bacon with their biscuits and gravy. Go meat!

Quick & Dirty

I am already feeling NaBloPoMo fatigue and can’t think of anything to post except for some random thoughts and musings about my day:

  1. Today I had a fine lunch at Fu Man’s Dumpling House with Karen Anderson and Jim Benson - two friends that I have met recently in my forays into writing and social media. I originally wanted to pick Karen’s brain (since she’s a seasoned freelance writer extraordinaire) but our conversation gravitated to food, life and relationships - my favorite topics in the whole world. I love listening to people talk and am a huge sucker for a story. And the lunch wasn’t entirely unproductive, Karen paid me a nice complement and gave me some good advice about my writing style, which I am definitely taking to heart. Jim ordered the cold pork jelly. Lol. Continue reading ‘Quick & Dirty’

Live Big

As you can tell, I was just born to be famous. I had the haircut of the moment (hello Dorthy Hamill) and a fur-rimmed jacket that even J.Lo would envy. And check out the hand in one pocket, so pimp!

This picture was taken at the Shore Acres Botanical Gardens in Coos Bay, Oregon. I used to think this place was magical, especially around Christmas when they would place festive lights all around the gardens. I haven’t been back to Coos Bay since my sister Gina and I had to transition my aunt and uncle into a nursing home facility back in 2006. My uncle was pushing 100 and my aunt had a debilitating stroke. They never had any kids so it was all left to the nieces and nephews to deal with the situation. Continue reading ‘Live Big’

My How Things Have Changed

Friday’s dining excursion made me reminisce about of this picture of me (age 4) with our feathered friend the pigeon - a.k.a. dinner. Here I am feeding the pigeons. Now the pigeons are feeding me. My how things have changed. Continue reading ‘My How Things Have Changed’

Pigeon Heads Are Crunchy Things

Last night I had dinner with some former coworkers at a Cantonese restaurant that I had never been to in the International District.  Even though there were 5 of us (all of whom were Asian) they only gave the menus to the two Chinese women in our party.  Since they were taking me out to dinner to in celebration of my last day at work, I let them choose the place and order the food.  Plus, I always find that I get infinitely better service when someone who is Chinese orders anyways (rather me pointing or ordering by number).

Well, they ordered a feast.  Dungeness crab, stir-fried pea vines, salt and pepper squid, steamed sea bass with green onion and ginger, some dish that ended with the word “delight” and squab.  Yup, squab. They tried to pawn it off as Cornish Game hens or quail but when that baby hit the table I immediately knew what it was by the cranial structure of the birds head. That ain’t no quail.
