Mindy was the first mom friend that I ever had. Her son Remy and Paige were inseparable and therefore she and I were inseparable. We did everything together and I was incredibly heartbroken the day that they moved to New Jersey. It was like my world just fell to pieces.
Since then, I have never had a mom friend quite like that. You know, they type of friendship that you would carry on whether or not your kids actually liked each other. My friend Cathy is a mom, but I don’t consider her a “mom friend” even though she has three kids. I actually consider her a soul sister, who just happens to have children.
Nowadays, I don’t really worry about connecting with friends who are moms. Paige is older, I don’t need to set up play dates and there’s no going to pick her from school and casually running into other parents anymore. I am now focused on expanding my circle of friends and maintaining the circle that already exists. And at some point, I would like to find a husband, partner, boyfriend, whatever.

This week’s topic: How do you talk to your kids about death?
Dana Loesch from Mamalogues and Alice Bradley from Finslippy weigh in:
I won’t lie. I was down in the dumps after my Uncle’s passing. As a result, I was kind of “loose” with my normal grooming habits. For instance, I think I wore the same sweats for 3 days in a row. In fact, I probably wore the same everything for 3 days in a row. Just so you know, by day 3 your sweats are starting to sag around the ass and knees which looks REALLY flattering. This may have worked when I was 18 and was all fresh and dewy in my youth, but when you’re 34, you end up looking like a washed out druggie looking for a fix.
I just watched the latest Momversation episode (which was filmed last week) and my hair looks all flat and shiny (but it’s all greasy and gross). Just so y’all know, I spend half the time wearing my hair flat and the other half painstakingly curling it with a 3/4 inch Vidal Sassoon ceramic curling iron that I got at Marshalls for $9.99. (It is the best curling iron that I ever owned and it recently died as well. There was a moment of grieving involved with that too.)
Because I have issues with falling asleep, you can pretty much guess how much rest I got based on whether or not my hair is curly (because it takes so much time to do). I keep telling myself that I am going to break down and get a perm just so I can sleep in and still get the same effect, but everytime that say “perm” to someone, they make a face and say something like, “DID YOU SAY PERM? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? THAT IS SOOOO 80′s.”
And don’t even try say the word “perm” in a salon. It’s like the F-word in there.

I think I would have just imploded if I was home schooled. First of all, I don’t think that there would be anyone at home to home school me. Secondarily, as a child of Korean immigrants, it was the other way around – I was often home schooling my parents. I can definitely recall quizzing my newly immigrated Korean step-mother on the naturalization questions. Or preparing the tax returns for the household. Or interpreting for my parents when they pretending that they didn’t understand English (even when they really did). You try arguing with a child who is interpreting for their parents. It shuts people down.
I think that I would make an awful home school teacher, but I applaud those that do. Teaching Paige would be something akin to this:
Me: Math is important.
Paige: Nuh-uh.
Me: Uh-huh.
Paige: Nuh-uh.
Me: Uh-uh.
Paige: Nuh-uh.
Me: Math is important BECAUSE I SAID SO AND I’M THE BOSS.
Dana Loesch from Mamalogues asks Mindy Roberts, The Mommy Blog, and I about home schooling in this episode of Momversation.
Oh yeah, just incase you wanted to get a closer look at segregation in the early 80′s, this is what it looks like:
